Chris’s research interests include music of the Renaissance, English sacred music, keyboard music, historical performance practice, and the history of the organ. He has published articles in Early Music, Organists’ Review, The Musical Times, The Organ Yearbook and Laudate.
Chris read music at the University of Bristol and was a recipient of the Napier Miles Prize. He wrote his BA dissertation on The Solo Organ and Sacred Choral Music of Kenneth Leighton. At the age of 21 he won a University of Wales Research Studentship to Cardiff University where he wrote his thesis, British Cantus Firmus Settings for Keyboard from the Early Sixteenth Century to the Middle of the Seventeenth Century, graduating PhD in 1996.
Chris undertook post-doctoral work on the Mackworth and Aylward Collections of music in Cardiff University and he worked with Professor John Caldwell of the University of Oxford on the article Keyboard Music to 1750 in the 2001 edition of the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He has given papers at several conferences, and has been interviewed on musical topics on BBC radio. Chris has also undertaken educational research.
